Weekend Watch (Jan 21-22, 2012)

NCAA Men’s Basketball – Missouri vs. Baylor (Jan 21. 2pm, ESPN)
Not only is this a match-up of top five teams, but it will be another tough test for Baylor. Coming off the loss to Kansas on Monday, the Bears are back in Ferrell Center to prove they are still a serious contender in the Big 12 race, and potentially the final four. Can Perry Jones lead this time to excellence and continue the “Year of the Baylor Bears” (Women’s BBall and Heisman winner RGIII)?

NCAA Men’s Basketball – Cincinnati vs. West Virginia (Jan 21. 3pm, ESPN)
This game is a must watch for two very different reasons. The first reason is obvious, I’m biased. Therefore I encourage you to always watch the Mountaineers. But the better and more relevant reason: this game will show which Big East team is willing to compete with Syracuse for the Big East title. Cincinnati is on a tear since the ugly brawl with Xaxier, but the Bearcats will have a tough time at the Coliseum in Morgantown. The Mountaineers have been on a see-saw with their performances as a team this year, partly because they had only 3 returning players from last year’s team. Still, the young players (Browne, Hinds, Noreen) are finally starting to trust in Huggins and the type of basketball that he expects. Also, Kevin Jones, a player who has been playing beyond his potential (averaging a double-double during Big East play), will be perhaps the toughest challenge the Bearcats have faced to date. The winner here will probably have the best chance to take the crown from the Orange.

NCAA Men’s Basketball – Connecticut vs. Tennessee (Jan 21.  4pm, CBS)
Can the defending champs recover from the heartbreak lost to Cincinnati and go to Thompson-Doling Arena to face what is traditionally one of the best SEC basketball programs? Tennessee’s season hasn’t been the best and currently has a losing record, but these Volunteers know what is at stake. They can still salvage their season, but it has to start by beating some RPI teams. UConn is a good place to begin. Keep a close eye on this game. Potential upset.

NCAA Men’s Basketball – Florida State vs. Duke (Jan 21. 4pm, ESPN)
Florida State took down one ACC giant, UNC. Can they muster up the strength and will to defeat the Blue Devils at Cameron Indoor Stadium? Coach K and Duke are usually unbeatable with the Cameron Crazies in the house, but Virginia dented their armor and showed the ACC that it is possible to beat Duke at home.  39 straight home victories for Duke might come to an end when Snear and Miller come to play. I believe Coach K will have a game plan to neutralize the Seminoles intensity and determination.

AFC Championship Game- Ravens vs. Patriots (Jan 22. 3pm, CBS)
It’s football. The only reason I need to give. Though seeing the Golden Boy against an aggressive but aging defense will be exciting to watch. I don’t see the Pats scoring 40+ points again, so this game will be put in the hands of Flacco. For Ravens fans, you don’t want to see Flacco throw it more than 25 times: that is an omen for defeat.

NFC Championship Game- Giants vs. 49ers (Jan 22. 6:30pm, FOX)
San Francisco is in the NFC playoffs? I would not have guessed that at the beginning of the season. I’m sure Candlestick will be rough and rowdy Sunday night, but Niner fans need to be afraid. Eli and the Giants are rolling though with a tremendous amount of momentum. If the 49ers can pressure Eli with their front line and use Frank Gore to control the clock, they will have a chance, but Eli will find Cruz and Nicks when Bradshaw can’t progress the ball on the ground. This will be a fantastic game.
