My Most Memorable Sports Moments: #5 Tiger Woods chip on the 16th at the 2005 Masters

I’ve decided to begin the blog with recalling sporting events that fully embody the greatness in sports, though only events that I have seen. This list will demonstrate to any readers what Bother Saas #2 enjoys about sports and the emotions any great moment brings forth.

If you are beating a club into the ground, yelling and you call it “golf”, you’ll be accepted as civilized and normal. If you don’t, people might suspect you of witchcraft or voodoo.  As I often find myself slamming my vile 56 degree sand wedge into the ground, I would have to agree with the former. Golf is probably the most beloved sport I play regularly. Something about going to the links and hitting a tiny, dimpled ball through the air into a small round cup is extremely enjoyable. I played in high school, and still try to keep my game in what I call “adequate” shape. So I understand the struggle and difficulty of perfecting one’s golf game.

In 2005, during my adolescent years when my interest in golf was probably the greatest, Tiger Woods did what Tiger Woods does best. He put himself in yet another undesirable position, and spun gold like Rumpelstiltskin could only dream.  At the 16th hole of the Masters, Tiger Woods had a tough chip shot onto the green.  Keep in mind he is still chasing DiMarco, who was leading at the time. Now, if you know anything about golf, you understand how difficult even the simplest of shots can be. Imagine your ball being on the fringe of rough so thick it makes finding a needle in a hay stack seem like a piece of cake. Add on to that you have to successfully hit up a ridge with just enough force to peak it but no further, and to put the cherry on top, having the ball land on a green that felt like it had no friction and roll precisely into the hole.

For me, that is an impossible feat. For Tiger Woods, it was typical day at Augusta.  The moment at the 16th encompasses everything I love about watching golf. It was a clutch moment where even with perfect execution, the right skill sets, and the fact that Tiger Woods is expected to do the unexpected, the shot was still unbelievable. The announcers talked about the difficulty, and how they would be surprise if it was closer than DeMarco’s ball. Tiger chips it. The rumble of the crowd brings to rise. I was on the edge of my seat as the golf ball inched ever closer to the pin, the Nike Swoosh standing on the edge of the hole, teasing everyone watching (and giving Nike even more publicity). Finally the ball drops in and the crowd erupts as Tiger looks like he went Barbarian Berserk.

That shot will be in my mind for a long time to come.
